What are the advantages of earning a culinary arts masters degree? Cooking has come to the attention of television viewers with the exciting competition between chefs. The public has learned about many different foods and how they are prepared by experts in the field but many people might not know that it is now possible to get a degree in this field.
Culinary Arts Masters Education and Training
Associate and Bachelor’s Degrees are also available. It has been stated that there are 153 Banking and Pastry Arts Degrees as well as cooking courses available for a prospective student. This means it will take some research and careful examination of what the various schools have to offer, including those that offer online courses. This would mean being sure that they offer a Master’s Degree as well as having accreditation.
Those who enter the Master’s program have already had training in the basic food preparation, such as baking, pastry, general cooking and culinary arts. Many candidates for this degree are looking for advancement, possibly into management. Therefore, the program is less concentrated on cooking, but rather on theory such as providing direction as well as short and long term planning and management of hospitality programs. The training also includes financial and growth strategies.
The Master’s program study is concentrated on things such as nutrition and food science, human resource management and cost control in hospitality settings, as well as quality improvement. In doing research it was discovered that the majority of Culinary Schools and Institutions do not have a formal Master’s Degree program but, rather, have various advanced programs that issue certificates of completion. Some areas of practice may require certification, for instance when working in food inspection or preparation depending on the setting.
Most of the culinary arts universities that have this upper-level education opportunity are universities. This is because they can provide the extra levels of education and course work beyond simply learning how to cook. Many people who pursue this degree are career chefs or bakers who wish to advance to a higher position. It is evident that one must have previous training and experience to be admitted to the program.
Careers in Culinary Arts
One great advantage of having a Master’s Degree is that there are great opportunities in hospitality and/or restaurant management. This is because of being able to combine previous food preparation education with higher education. It can also often advance a person to the position of head chef, if one wishes to remain in the kitchen.
There are many other companies, connected with the food industry, who are also looking for people who have this kind of education, including a culinary arts certificate. Many ocean liners, for example, are looking for educated culinary people, to handle the ship’s dining room and kitchen, as well as casinos, resorts, hotels, and large institutions that must have nutritious food served to their clients.
Estimated Income and Projected Job Outlook
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, people with this degree are promoted in resorts and hotels much faster than others and that it is a good career choice. They also predict an increase in jobs to be 6% from 2008 and 2018. Many of the people with a Culinary Arts Masters Degree, work at the management level unless they are planning to open their own restaurant. After graduation the minimum salary is reported to be around $30,000 to $40,000 annually. This would, of course, increase with continued advancement.
